Uses Of Carbon Black Oil

Carbon black oil (CBO) is a product formed when hydrocarbons are steam cracked under extreme temperatures. The cracking does not require any catalysts apart from the steam and high temperatures. CBO is mainly made up of unsaturated carbons that are higher than C14. USA is a major producer of CBO, which is mainly consumed by countries in Western Europe. Consumption of USA CBO has grown steadily in the Asia pacific region over the years. Majority of the CBO purchased is used in making carbon black. CBO can be derived from three main sources. Firstly, as a decant oil that is produced from the gas oils catalytic cracking (FCC) process that aims at generating gasoline. Secondly, CBO is also derived from coal tar oils including creosote, or from coal gasification or coking. Thirdly, CBO is obtained from ethylene tar during the steam cracking process of gas oils and naphthas to generate ethylene. Although US produces most of the CBO—approximately 5 million tones— it only consumes around 2 percent, and derives sales by exporting the rest to the world. Most of the CBO derived from America is decant oil from the FCC process. The consumption of CBO has risen steadily over the years across most countries in the world.
CBO is required in manufacturing of black carbon because it has a high quantity of aromatic hydrocarbons, which is an essential raw material. Aromatic hydrocarbons increase the amount of hydrocarbon yielded, since they have several condensed rings. CBO is pumped into a furnace with hot gases that have temperatures of between 1200 to 1800°C. The CBO feed stock is subjected to pyrolysis and incomplete combustion. Incomplete combustion is achieved by injecting water into the reactors at the opportune time, leading to the formation of carbon black and tail gas. The gas is passed through various sieves, thus the carbon black is filtered from the gas. Afterwards, the carbon black is mixed with water, dried and packaged into granules and delivered to customers. Most of the carbon black produced is used in the rubber industry as filler for rubber products such as tires, flexible tubes and conveyor belts. Also, carbon black provides the black pigment used in varnishes, Indian ink, paints, dyes and printing inks. It is also used in fibers, décor paper, and mascara, as well as for providing UV protection in plastics. Carbon black is also used in the electrical industry to make carbon brushes and electrodes. The various uses of carbon black especially in the motor vehicle industry, is what has led to the high demand of CBO in the world.
Although CBO is important in providing the feedstock for making carbon black, medical research has shown that it is detrimental to health. Research has ascertained that it contains numerous categories of hydrocarbons that produce gestational and systematic toxicities. This means that CBO produces undesirable health effects in pregnant women. Most of these medical studies exposed pregnant mice to CBO, and killed them to analyze its effects on the developing fetuses. The research concluded that women exposed to CBO during pregnancy had low maternal weight gain. CBO also resulted in malformed fetuses since it led to low folic absorption. From this research, it is clear that pregnant women should avoid working in CBO plants, as it can cause serious side effects to the mother and unborn child.

Often referred to as the holy grail of the tire recycling process, pyrolysis is a field that has seen many recent breakthroughs as well as exploration by entrepreneurs and researchers. Until recently, char was where pyrolysis-based recycling hit a wall. The startup capital required to get into the industry as well as the considerable operating costs made it difficult to turn a profit with tire pyrolysis. On top of that, the only real revenue came from collecting the gases; the char was of little monetary or applicable value. Without the ability to sell or use the char, potential revenue was being lost and waste removal fees were being incurred. Within the past several years, however, a handful of companies have discovered ways to further process char into a substitute for carbon black (a substance used in the strengthening of rubber and plastic products).

With these new methods, tire recyclers are able to increase their profits enough to make the industry economically viable. It also means that a properly running pyrolysis facility will be extremely green; the process produces little waste and can reuse the gasses given off in the process as a source of power. Once it has been further refined, the char can be sold to manufacturers of rubber products. Any steel that was in the char (from tire frames or hubs) can be sold to scrapyards and recycling plants once separated out. This means that nearly one hundred percent of the input is useable in some way.

The corporations leading the charge with the latest pyrolysis technology have plans for rapid expansion and development across the globe. They offer everything from complete processing of all input material to the sale of excess power produced by burning the output vapors of their equipment. Some are even starting programs to sell carbon credits earned with their low waste techniques. Research is also being conducted on the applications of the oil condensed from the output gases. From the physical locations to the theoretical possibilities, tire pyrolysis as a field and a process is growing and it promises to bring about advances in technology and function. It is also inspiring new proposals for other low-emission recycling methods and is truly a model for the green movement. If current trends continue, it will be a topic to follow over the next decade as its expansion and practice continue on.
